Zettlr overview

Zettlr is a reliable companion for writing scientific texts and taking notes. It is made for academics in the humanities and arts and is intended to keep your content apart from your design, but close to the notes you take. To reach this goal, Zettlr incorporates several important features:

  • File-agnostic editing. Zettlr does not store any information about your files, except in your files. This way you can always switch to and from Zettlr. Every file you see inside the preview pane corresponds to a file on your disk. With no special additions that might render the use of your files difficult for other editors.
  • Zettelkasten-Methods implemented directly into the app. With Zettlr, you can link files and searches using "Wiki-Links" in the format [[your search text|@ID:ID]], give IDs by typing @ID:Your-ID-Here and tag your files using Twitter-like hashtags: #hashtag. Holding down the Alt-key and clicking on links will try to open exact-match files and also initiate searches, while Alt-clicks on tags will simply initiate searches. More features are likely to come.
  • A directory list. This list contains all open directories and files. You can open new directories by pressing Cmd/Ctrl+O. New files can be opened simply by double clicking them in your file browser or by dragging them onto the app. Every time you start the app, all previously opened paths will be re-loaded.
  • A preview pane that lists all the files that are inside the currently selected directory and separates them by their subdirectory. Just click on a file to open it in …
  • … the editor, which takes the most space and is the crucial component that actually makes Zettlr an editor. You are able to write Markdown-files in the area, a slim text format that keeps formatting to a bare minimum.
  • Exporting options. Using the open source software pandoc and LaTeX, Zettlr enables you to export all files on the fly in a variety of formats; currently HTML, DOCX, ODT and PDF. Just open a file and press Cmd/Ctrl+E.
  • Searching. Zettlr enables you to quickly search through your files to find what you are looking for in a fraction of the time you'd need if you store all your information in several word documents that you'd have to open and search.
  • A toolbar containing all functions in handy button-form.

Note: While the software is classified as free, it is actually donationware. Please consider making a donation to help support development.

What's new in version 4.8.0

GUI and Functionality
  • Feature: Admonitions are here! Zettlr now supports a broad range of
  • admonitions (sometimes also referred to as alerts or callouts). You can use
  • admonitions to emphasize certain content in your documents using Blockquote
  • syntax with a special header (see PR. #6497 for details). This closes a long-
  • standing feature request (#532). Some notes:
    • Admonitions come with support of five keywords: note (gray), tip
    • (green), warning (yellow), important (purple), and caution (red).
    • Zettlr supports custom titles for admonitions (full compatibility with other
    • popular Markdown editors).
    • The app ships with a renderer for admonitions that you can turn on and off
    • just like any other renderer.
    • Note that, to make admonitions survive exports, you will need to enable the
    • alerts-extension of Pandoc in the reader of the profile in question.
    • Zettlr will use similar HTML-syntax when you copy text with admonitions
    • using the "Copy with Styles" option, but whether this survives pasting into
    • other applications depends on support on their side.
  • Feature: You can now choose whether you want to automatically accept the
  • selected autocomplete suggestion when pressing Tab, Enter, both, or
  • disable automatic accepting entirely (#6485).
  • Change: The old mark setting has been replaced by a new settings
  • category that enforces support for several Pandoc extensions during export. If
  • you have disabled the mark support in the import/export settings previously,
  • you will need to disable this again after updating Zettlr.
  • Change: Fixed a fundamental issue with the full-text search that would
  • turn AND-searches implicitly into OR searches. If you relied on how
  • the full-text search actually worked, and not how it was described in the
  • documentation, you will now have to explicitly add pipe-operators (|)
  • between your search terms to mark them as alternatives. By default, the full-
  • text search now requires all operators separated by a space to be present in a
  • file to be considered a valid result (#6517).
  • New Translation: Zettlr now ships with an additional language:
  • Azerbaijani. See PR #6548 for details.
  • Improved the custom title bar style on both Linux (if native appearance is
  • turned off) and Windows. Here's what changed:
    • The logo is now an actual element rather than background, and has been
    • scaled down to better fit into the menu bar.
    • The window controls now use a transparent background and a light/dark color
    • depending on which theme the app is currently using.
    • Improved the spacing around the menu items to make them less menacing.
  • Fixed the about window's debug tab: No more horizontal scrolling, and the
  • PATH-variable is properly split into segments.
  • Fixed some alignment issues with custom symbols on toolbar buttons; now the
  • buttons should all be properly centered.
  • Fixed an issue where in some places instead of showing you a proper file
  • title, the app would default to only showing you the filename, and neither a
  • heading or YAML title, if you specified it as such. Now, the logic has been
  • centralized and everywhere you expect a proper file title it should now show
  • you one (see #6471).
  • Set default mode for LanguageTool to standard for new installations. If you
  • prefer picky, simply set it accordingly.
  • Fixed an issue where configuration changes emitted from the onboarding dialog
  • for new users were one-way-only, with no way to undo the changes. This has now
  • been changed: the buttons accurately reflect the actual configuration state,
  • and pressing the buttons multiple times toggles between the two sets of
  • suggested settings (#6429).
  • Update translations:
    • ko-KO (#6478).
    • de-DE.
    • ja-JP (#6480).
    • ca-ES (#6530).
    • pt-BR (#6537).
    • tr-TR (#6533).
    • az-AZ (#6548).
  • Renamed "Remove line breaks" to "Remove excess line breaks."
  • Fixed an issue in full text search where multiple search terms separated by
  • whitespace would use an 'OR' operator rather than the documented 'AND'
  • operator. Now, search terms separated by whitespace correctly use the 'AND'
  • operator (#6517).
  • Fixed an issue that prevented inserting a new row when the cursor is placed in
  • the final row of the table (#6512; #6513).
Under the Hood
  • Update Electron to v43.6.0.
  • Zettlr now checks whether a Pandoc extension it seeks to enable during export
  • is actually supported by the reader to avoid errors when, e.g., using the
  • commonmark reader which does not support the mark extension.
  • Updates to the translations are now deterministic (#6538). This causes minimal
  • diffs between iterations and should also reduce the risks for merge conflicts
  • between open translation PRs and POT update PRs.

V 2.1 still crashes on 10.13. They've isolated the problem with the Electron framework. Sadly, I've supported other electron-based projects that were orphaned by them. So this is a hard-pass for me. Luckily FSNotes works great on MacOS. Don't need android, Linux, or Windows for now.

Zettlr is incredibly powerful : you can create files and write them in GFM markdown (that means table of content and footnote, tables), plus extras, like folding text (really useful when you write long papers).
It uses Latex and Pandoc parser to export in a huge range of format (including .docx or .odt, of course PDF, ePub and other text format), and academics can use Zotero to manage bibliography.
You can manage extra folders without moving them (excellent: you store your files and folders wherever you want, just drag and drop them to Zettlr), and transform folder to project, meaning you can export a project as an only one merged file).
I just miss the preview feature, which is not fully implemented, but I asked the dev and I'm sure it will come soon.
This app is a gem, the dev is open and responsive, it's just an incredible free and open source app, as powetful as Ulysses, but you're not trapped in a subscription model, and the arrogance of the devs.

I recommand it to any one who want to manage a big writing project, like a paper, a novel, a bunch of short stories, a book (scientific books are welcome, as it can deal with latex and mathjax syntax).
